Hampton
Store was built in 1921 to serve the basic needs of a growing
logging industry in the Blue Ridge Mountains. One of the original
stops for Tweetsie Railroad, Hampton Store expanded to care
for the surrounding Linville Community. Around the turn of the century, any local homes were
built as summer havens for families who wanted to escape the
heat of their southern homes.
Today,
it is still possible to recapture a simpler time of quality
merchandise and friendly, honest service. The country store
carries housewares and unique decorating accents plus delicious
jams, jellies, cheeses, country ham, honey and our very special
stone ground flours and meal.
The
Hampton Grist Mill was built in 1934. The mill would grind
locally grown North Carolina white corn and wheat, in addition
to rye and buckwheat from the heart of Pennsylvania Amish
country. The resulting 100% natural product delivered the
special taste found only in stone ground flours and meal.
The
Mill is periodically open for demonstrations throughout the
summer season.
Inside
the store, you'll also find Uncle Lee's
Barbeque serving lean, hickory-smoked barbeque, on homemade
sourdough rolls--made fresh daily! A delicious combination!
Also try the famous Black-eyed Pea Salad, soups, pies and
homemade banana pudding.
If
you're lucky enough to be traveling through our beautiful
Blue Ridge Mountains, be sure to stop in and see us. We're
located just 2.2 miles from Grandfather Mountain and 3.3 miles
from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Pull up a chair and swap tales
about the ones that got away, or just browse through the wide
variety of goods and mountain crafts that give Old Hampton
Store its distinct character.
Be
sure to also check out 87 Ruffin Street,
the gallery next door to the Old Hampton Store for unusual
local and regional folk art, pottery, and woodcarving on display
in the historic Hampton Homeplace, circa 1919.
